Well, to be fair, I wouldn't eat it (directly) eetihr, given that it's likely field corn, not sweet corn.Of course, High Fructose Corn Syrup takes work to avoid - The Omnivore's Dilemma has a nice commentary on why we're "Corn people".As for prices, don't forget fertlizer, i.e., in some cases, natural gas. Over the longer term, one would hope that weird ag subsidies will lessen, and the lower inputs required for things like switchgrass or miscanthus will put them ahead of corn for any biofuel applications. Less overuse of nitrogen fertilizer is good anyway (runoff), but in any case, it's going to get very expensive.

As I understand the orsceps, the algie is used for the conversion of simple sugars to jet fuel and other green products now being made from petroleum. The leaset costly orscepsing should be utilizing dedicated high yielding sugar based feedstock that go directly to renewable fuels through a low cost conversion orsceps.

Interesting article. I wonder which of the methods to produce biodiesel will turn out to be the best. I see more and more companies invest in algae biodiesel. I wrote an article on this method onEnergyInformative.org

I would really appreciate any inpout on this.

Kind regards,
Mathias

Green chemistry is a promising industry. In an effort to save the environment, it is good that they came up with this.

Dear Anant
Thanks for your comment.
I agree, this conflict will probably decline after industrializing non food crops for polymer or fuel production. Actually, this process has already begun.
But especially in Europe, many farmers receive incentive payments for non-growing crop. So the real reason of rising food prices mainly relies on speculation. There is an InnovativeIndustry.net article about the Food vs. Fuel Controversy which might interest you.

This article is very interesting. The conflict between using polymers based on fossil fuels or based on food crops will continue until we are able to extract starch from cellulosic material.

Algae has been researched to death at universities for almost 50 years. Taxpayers have spent over $2.5 billion on algae research with nothing commercialized to date.

The real question is: Does the DOE really want the US off of foreign oil or do they want to continue give grants to algae researchers to keep them employed at universities for ANOTHER 50 Years?
